Port Austin / Grindstone City: A Lake Huron Getaway Worth the Drive

Port Austin is the Get Away Destination You've Been Looking For

You've been to Lake Michigan. It's time to discover Lake Huron.

Port Austin is a tucked-away Lake Huron beach town with a laid-back feel, great for anyone who enjoys the outdoors or a drink on the patio. Everything is within walking distance, and the combination of natural wonders, good food, and easy vacation rentals makes it one of the better-kept secrets on the Michigan coast.

Best Things to Do in Port Austin

Kayak to Turnip Rock

Number one on most people's Port Austin list. Turnip Rock is a limestone formation just off the Lake Huron shoreline, shaped by thousands of years of wind and wave action. You can only reach it by water — kayak or boat tour. The four-hour paddle trip runs about $40 through Port Austin Kayak, and the route hugs miles of rugged, undeveloped shoreline before you get there. It's a long paddle, but worth every stroke.

Port Austin Farmers Market & Village Green

One of the largest farmers markets in Michigan, with over 50 vendors each Saturday from May through early October. Produce, farm goods, food, antiques, coffee, and more spread across two streets and two parking lots. Give yourself the full four hours. The Village Green runs Fridays and Saturdays alongside the market during the warmer months.

Port Crescent State Park & Dark Sky Preserve

Three miles of sandy Lake Huron shoreline, mini-dunes, shallow swimming water, and some of the best stargazing in the state. Port Crescent is a certified Dark Sky Preserve, which means clear nights here are genuinely spectacular. Camping options range from geodesic domes to hammock-only sites. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required to enter.

Bird Creek Park & The Breakwall

A boardwalk, beach, splash pad, and kayak access along the shoreline. The Breakwall is a great sunset walk — bring a jacket, the wind comes up fast. On rough days, waves crash one side while the other stays calm. It's a good spot to fish, too.

Where to Eat

PAK's Backyard overlooks Port Austin Harbor and is the kind of place you end up going back to three times. Coffee in the morning, lunch with a water view, dinner under lights with live music. The fries are serious.

Bird Creek Farms is an outdoor porch bar on an actual farm, with Michigan brews on tap and a menu that swings from walleye bites and perch tacos to steak frites and quinoa salad. Walking in feels more like arriving at someone's home than a restaurant.

Other spots worth knowing: Pirates Cove at Lake Street Local, The Bank 1884 Food & Spirits, and Green Clean Bean for coffee.
